Chapter Ten

Bright sunlight penetrated the curtain sheers to Jared’s

parents’ bedroom. His whole body ached, and for an instant, he

wondered why as he sat up and gathered his senses. His pounding

head didn’t help.

He instinctively reached for Michael, but the bed beside him

remained empty and cold. Panicked, Jared sprang up and scanned the

room only to find Michael lying on the floor against the wall with his

head propped up on his duffel bag.

Had he slept there all night? “Mike.” His scratchy throat

stung.

No response.

“Michael,” he raised his voice.

Michael stirred then slowly sat up and rubbed his eyes. “Cool,

you’re awake.”

Jared reached for his clothes. “Shit, I really fucked up.” An

uneasy sense of anxiety gnawed in his gut.

“You didn’t do anything.”

“I ran out of here like a pussy. I’m sorry.”

Michael got to his feet and joined Jared on the bed. “You were

upset.”

“That’s no excuse. I’ve gotta deal with this. Shit, I should

have dealt with this a long time ago.”

Michael rubbed Jared’s shoulder. “It’s all gonna work out.”

Jared got up and collected his clothes. The fear he’d felt the

night before had faded, and now anger gradually took its place. “I

need to settle up with Raul.”

“You don’t owe him an explanation.”

Jared pulled his t-shirt over his head. “No, I’m not cool with

what he said, and he needs to hear it from me.”

Nodding, as if in agreement, Michael walked into the

bathroom.

“Have you heard anything about the storm?” Jared called out,

his voice becoming stronger.

“No. I think Joel has the radio, though,” Michael said back

over the sound of running water.

Jared pulled his jeans on and then his shoes. “I need to call my

parents again.”

Michael emerged from the bathroom with water beading

across his tanned body, looking downright irresistible.

Jared’s gaze roamed over every muscle of his abdomen and

bare chest. When his eyes settled on Michael’s big brown orbs, his

scalp tingled. “What the hell?” He stalked over to the other man and

examined the cut over his brow, diligently tilting Michael’s head from

side to side.

“You should see the other guy.”

Jared mulled over the events from the previous night and

recalled Michael’s ferocious assault of Raul after – well, after shit

went sideways. “I never meant for any of that to go down that way.”

“Jared, it’s nobody’s fault. It just happened.”

Jared nodded, if only to avoid an argument. If he’d been more

of a man and less of a coward, Michael wouldn’t have had to tackle

Raul at all. “At least now I know you can handle yourself without

me.”

“What?” Michael looked up at him with a severely arched

brow. “Did you think I needed protecting?”

“No,” Jared said, suddenly realizing how his comment may

have sounded a bit condescending.

“I’m a big boy, Jared. I’ve dealt with dumbass haters my

whole life.”

“I know, I only meant…” He struggled for the words.

“You meant what?”

Jared sighed. What in the hell did he mean? Was Michael the

type of man who needed to be taken care of, or did Jared naturally

want to take care of him whether Michael wanted him to or not? He

wasn’t a girl. Fuck! Am I supposed to want to protect him at all?

Confusing thoughts stacked in his mind.
